About

“Everything you do or say is public relations.” – Unknown

Happonen Communications is not just another PR shop.

Sure we bring strategic planning; strong media relations; proven social media expertise; expert crisis communications; and a list of clients who can speak to our proven results.

Sure we’ve won a number of awards recognizing our expertise, including several from the Public Relations Society of America, the National MarComm Award and a national Clarion Award.

And yes, we have relationships with senior professionals in all facets of marketing, communications and creative services to better assist our clients target their audience.

But that’s not what makes us unique.

We are a strong PR shop that delivers innovative ideas that achieve measurable results.

Reporting is built into every campaign we deliver, not as an add-on, but as an essential feature of how we achieve our results.

But that’s not what makes us unique.

We are a husband/wife team. Originally launched by Heidi Happonen, an agency and corporate PR vet, Happonen Communications began operations in 2006 in a traditional brick-and-mortar shop just north of Seattle. Johannes Happonen joined soon after to lead and manage all creative and multimedia tools.

But that’s not what makes us unique.

Our office can drive. Well, not by itself, but that IS what makes us unique.

Happonen Communications is the only fully-mobile PR shop in the nation. What does this mean for our clients?

It means we have a unique perspective on the pulse of the nation.

It means we can be headquartered wherever we are needed. Even if that’s in your parking lot.

It means we are by design on top of the latest technology and communications trends. Our mobile office doesn’t work without them.

It means we can provide added-value research for our clients who want to tap into the heartbeat of a target audience beyond what a contrived focus group may provide.

And it means we are by nature flexible, fast-thinking, innovative communications pros who not only excel at traditional strategies and tactics but aren’t afraid to test new boundaries for the betterment of our clients.

Plus, we’re pretty interesting, fun people who believe everyone has a story. Every person, every business, every organization. And if you’re not telling yours, someone else is.

Contact us today to find out more about how we can work together to creatively and effectively tell your story.

recent work

Happonen Communications
launched a blog chronicling the adventures of a mobile office and taking the tempereature of the MarComm industry.

Happonen Communications
won its first Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Totem Award for its community relations program with Ocean Protein. The same newspaper that had in an 18-month period of time held more than 200 negative stories and letters to the editor about the plant, printed the announcement of the award.

Washington Manufacturing Services (WMS)
In a bold answer to growing demand from our state's 7,400 manufacturers, WMS developed a program to help them harness new product/service ideas from within their organizations. For most manufacturers, their production and processes were already streamlined. What they needed was top line growth. Working with the Clallam County Economic Development Council, the program evolved to include entrepreneurial assistance as well. Because the program was pulled together from so many different moving parts and sources, Happonen Communications was called upon to help brand and communicate it to state stakeholders in both business and government.

The result was Washington GrowsTM: A strategy for cultivating a recession-proof economy The program is currently under consideration by the Washington state legislature as a new tool to help stimulate economic growth with a projected potential of $2.84 billion in new revenue over the next ten years.

Pacific Coast Fisheries
When the whiting fishing season was cut short with only 1/3 of the quota harvested due to antiquated bycatch limits on a particular species of rockfish, Happonen Communications helped disseminate the issue with both media and regulatory agencies. The resulting pressure as evidenced by the piece aired on King-TV helped motivate a more rapid discussion of issue at the recent Pacific Fisheries Management Council meeting in September. The result? The fisheries are back in business and thousands of jobs are open again to local fishermen and other fishing professionals.

Start Out Right
The second annual "Party With A Purpose" kicked off on August 23, exceeding all expectations. A true grassroots partnership of area businesses, churches, schools, police and community groups came together to distribute 1,086 backpacks filled with school supplies to kids in need on Everett's troubled Casino Road. Live remote coverage from KING-TV helped Start Out Right drive more donations during the event enabling it to grow more than five-fold over its first year.

Ocean Protein Video Project

Ocean Protein is a fishmeal processing plant in Hoquiam Washington that produces approximately 6,000 tons of valuable protein-rich fishmeal annually for the aquaculture and supplement industries. After some initial controversy with the local community surrounding odor emissions generated at the plant, the company invested more than $5 million in odor reduction technology. We developed this video to help the local business and residential community understand Ocean Protein’s long-term commitment to the region and its neighbors.

Casino Road Stakeholders
A volunteer group of concerned citizens, educational leaders and government/social agencies, Happonen Communications provides pro bono PR council that has drawn a number of stories in the Everett Herald and KING-TV that point to the positive developments taking shape in a neighborhood in South Everett notorious for drugs, gangs and violence.
